Back-to-back earthquakes rattled northern California Monday morning in San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area. The stronger quake -- at a 4.0 magnitude -- was centered one mile north of El Cerrito in the East Bay and 10 miles north-northwest of Oakland. It struck at a depth of 5.7 miles at 5:33 a.m. PT, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It came about seven seconds after a 2.9 temblor -- known as the foreshock -- hit in nearly the same location. A series of moderate to strong earthquakes has rattled several parts of the globe including Iran, China, the Philippines and parts of the South Pacific in the past 12-24 hours. There have been no reports of serious damage or fatalities from these quakes thus far and no tsunami warnings were issued for areas that could be impacted. A similar earthquake earlier this week did injure 10 people in the Philippines. The strongest of the recent quakes was centered near Vanuatu, where the quake was recorded at a magnitude of 6.7 by the USGS. These recent quakes come less than two days from the anniversary of the 9.0 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Japan, causing a massive tsunami that devastated parts of the northeast coast of Japan and crippled the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. From Earthfiles.com- March 14, 2012 - Santorini Volcano Deforming At Levels Never Seen Before. “That could be dangerous. If the caldera erupts underwater, it could cause local tsunamis and affect boat traffic, including cruise ships, in the caldera. Earthquakes could damage homes and produce landslides along the cliffs.” - Andrew Newman, Ph.D., Georgia Tech Georgia Tech's Andrew Newman, Ph.D., who has been studying the volcanic island of Santorini with 20 GPS stations reports that the caldera is rapidly deforming at levels never seen before. Since January 2011, the caldera chamber has expanded with enough magma to fill a 900-foot-diameter sphere. 50,000 summer tourists a day visit the island where one of the largest volcanic events in human history occurred around 1,650 B. C., burying the port city of Akrotiri with more than 20 meters of ash and created the famous Santorini cliffs. The last Santorini eruption was in 1950. See: Georgia Tech. Fira/Skala town built on cliffs of Santorini caldera. The island of Santorini has a full time population of about 14,000 people, but during summer months, 50,000 tourists every day visit the island created by overlapping shield volcanoes. http://www.earthfiles.com/ Energy-Creations.com http://littlehomesteadinboise.blogspot.com/

A strong earthquake rocked a large swathe of northern Italy early on Sunday, killing at least four people, injuring dozens and seriously damaging historic buildings such as churches, bell towers and a medieval castle. The 6.0-magnitude quake was centered 22 miles north-northwest of Bologna in northern Italy at a relatively shallow depth of 6.3 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website. It struck at about 4 a.m. local time and was followed about an hour later by one of 5.1 magnitude, according to the USGS. A 4.2 quake had occurred a few hours earlier. MILAN — A magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit northern Italy on Tuesday, killing at least 10 people in the same region still struggling to recover from another fatal tremor on May 20. The May 20 quake was described by Italian emergency officials as the worst to hit the region since the 1300s. In addition to the deaths, it knocked down a clock tower and other centuries-old buildings and caused millions in losses to a region known for making Parmesan cheese. Its epicenter was about 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Bologna "This gets me to a question that returns to my mind practically every day of my life: what are the visitors?" Whitley Strieber

The damage in this 5.8 was bad because the building standards in Italy are very poor, so structural collapse was common. It was also shallow. |

5.3 Victoria, Australia June 19, 8.54pm. We had tremors here for a full minute. But we were far enough away not to have any damage at all. Dona Nobis Pacem.

Yes Nina I was in the earthquake area too, northeast part of Melbourne. I've felt a couple of small tremors here over the past 30 odd years. They usually seemed like banging on the windows. This was something different. I could feel the house shake, as if it was a strong wind, but kept increasing. No noise with it though. It was measured anywhere from 5.3 to 5.5. So the world tour of the earthquakes arrived here. It wasn't very long though. I must be something like 100 miles from the epicentre near Moe. |
