An update on the Christchurch aftershock sequence that began with the 7.1 quake in September: In recent days the aftershocks were noticably less frequent, then today a new, very localised series (very close to the city) began, leading police to close off streets. Check out the data, these quakes are VERY shallow, one being only 2km down (less than a mile). They have ranged between 2.7 and 4.9, totally 17 quakes within the last 21 hours, each causing damage to buildings and infrastructure due to the shallow depth. NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 6:43 pm Magnitude: 3.5 Depth: 5 km Details: 25 km west of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 5:26 pm Magnitude: 3.0 Depth: 5 km Details: Within 5 km of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 4:29 pm Magnitude: 3.2 Depth: 5 km Details: Within 5 km of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 3:20 pm Magnitude: 3.0 Depth: 7 km Details: Within 5 km of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 2:25 pm Magnitude: 3.1 Depth: 5 km Details: Within 5 km of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 1:12 pm Magnitude: 3.7 Depth: 5 km Details: Within 5 km of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 12:52 pm Magnitude: 2.9 Depth: 5 km Details: Within 5 km of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 12:34 pm Magnitude: 3.7 Depth: 2 km Details: Within 5 km of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 12:14 pm Magnitude: 2.9 Depth: 5 km Details: Within 5 km of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 11:53 am Magnitude: 3.5 Depth: 6 km Details: Within 5 km of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 10:35 am Magnitude: 3.6 Depth: 5 km Details: Within 5 km of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 10:30 am Magnitude: 4.9 Depth: 12 km Details: Within 5 km of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 8:03 am Magnitude: 3.8 Depth: 4 km Details: Within 5 km of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 5:34 am Magnitude: 2.7 Depth: 3 km Details: 10 km east of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 2:32 am Magnitude: 3.7 Depth: 6 km Details: Within 5 km of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 2:08 am Magnitude: 3.8 Depth: 8 km Details: Within 5 km of Christchurch NZDT: Sun, Dec 26 2010 2:07 am Magnitude: 4.2 Depth: 5 km Details: Within 5 km of Christchurch See http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10696606 for a report on the aftershocks. The 2km shallow quake surprised me, and it makes you wonder how shallow they can actually get. It's interesting to speculate on what it would look like if a quake epicentre actually occured on the edge of the surface. Has such a thing ever been known to happen? |

The University of Canterbury have set up this time-lapse earthquake map showing the sequence of earthquakes near Christchurch since the 7.1 quake in September. http://www.christchurchquakemap.co.nz/ To date, there have been 4,455 earthquakes of a size able to be felt, and as of January 21st, there has been no slow down or abatement of the earthquakes. These are just from the last 24 hours: 2.7M, depth: 2km 20/1/2011 15:52 2.4M, depth: 49km 20/1/2011 14:14 3.9M, depth: 5km 20/1/2011 12:36 2.9M, depth: 2km 20/1/2011 11:58 2.8M, depth: 5km 20/1/2011 11:55 2.7M, depth: 33km 20/1/2011 11:40 3.9M, depth: 5km 20/1/2011 11:10 3.1M, depth: 2km 20/1/2011 11:01 2.7M, depth: 5km 20/1/2011 09:28 3.3M, depth: 13km 20/1/2011 08:14 4.0M, depth: 13km 20/1/2011 08:06 3.4M, depth: 10km 20/1/2011 08:02 3.2M, depth: 12km 20/1/2011 06:28 5.1M, depth: 10km 20/1/2011 06:03 For an area that previously didn't have many earthquakes, it's a fascinating event. |

After some 10,000 aftershocks from the 7.1 quake last September, Christchurch has just suffered a 6.3 aftershock that has caused more damage than the 7.1, due to it being closer to the city, and shallower. It's been less than an hour since it happened, and there are no reports of any deaths yet, but I fear there will be quite a few as it struck during the lunch hour when the city streets were filled with people. Lots of buildings down and cars under rubble. Not good |

Thanks AS, although I'm not in Christchurch myself, so am not directly affected. There's been a further eight aftershocks in the past three hours as well, measuring 5.7, 4.5, 4.4, 3.4, 4.0, 5.5, 4.5 and a 5.0 about 15 minutes ago. Multiple deaths have now been confirmed. There were a few multi-storied buildings that "pancaked" downward. Thankfully a lot of people were out for lunch, but of course not everyone leaves work for lunch, so there would have still been lots of people inside. |

Also, a lot of activity in Iceland and along the New Madrid fault. As sea levels rise, they put pressure on the continental shelves. This leads to an increase on volcanic and earthquake activity. |

Gasp. I'm not sure, but I think my Japanese sister-in-law's family are in Sendai, and that is the name of the quake on wikipedia. They are apparently okay. I was told they couldn't be contacted but they eventually rang her. (Message edited by zentarantino on March 12, 2011) |

Conflicting reports about a possible meltdown in the nuclear reactor in Japan: www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fgw-japan-quake-meltdown-20110312,0,28 89362.story I don't know about you guys, but this disaster has caused me great sadness. Let us keep praying so it does not get any worse. I was not one to believe in the doomsday 2012 scenario, but now I am starting to have second thoughts about it. |

There's a couple of websites collecting the idiotic comments people are making on the internet about Japan: http://karmajapan.tumblr.com/ And people think humanity is on the verge of some kind of consciousness shift? I'm doubtful. |
