... creating a thread for solar activities to be posted.  COMPLEX ERUPTION ON THE SUN: This morning around 0855 UT, Earth orbiting satellites detected a C3-class solar flare. The origin of the blast was sunspot 1092. At about the same time, an enormous magnetic filament stretching across the sun's northern hemisphere erupted. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the action: Click to launch a 304 Å movie The timing of these events suggest they are connected, and a review of SDO movies strengthens that conclusion. Despite the ~400,000 km distance between them, the sunspot and filament seem to erupt together; they are probably connected by long-range magnetic fields. In this movie (171 Å), a shadowy shock wave (a "solar tsunami") can be seen emerging from the flare site and rippling across the northern hemisphere into the filament's eruption zone. That may have helped propel the filament into space. In short, we have just witnessed a complex global eruption involving almost the entire Earth-facing side of the sun. A coronal mass ejection (CME) produced by the event is heading directly for Earth: SOHO movie. High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras. The action began on August 3rd around 1740 UT when a CME hit Earth's magnetic field. The Sun Today: Solar Facts and Space Weather CMEs! In addition to a flare this morning, AR11261 produced a nice filament eruption, CME and small proton storm. There are now at least two Earth bounds CMEs with expected arrival data of late 8/4 early 8/5 for the 1st one and 8/7 for the 2nd one. The 1st of the 3 CMEs has hit Earth with minimal impact. The other 2 will be here midday (UTC) 8/5. The 2nd associated with the M9 flare was very fast (~4 million mph) and will probably overtake the first. Just found http://www.solarwatcher.net and very up to date Solar News today. 11/4/11 video update,shows and explains graphs...Strong X 1.9 Flare today associated with an R3 level radio blackout,,etc.. Reports from friends on wonky computers and other electronic devices(ours have been a little glitchy)lead me to look for Solar activity today.. Solar Watcher looks to be an interesting site,,also has earthquake activity and predictions based on what looks pretty scientific info/theory/,,etc. I am definitely going to spend some time reading there..Well presented info looks more tempting to me. | ||

A massive X 5.4 flare was released yesterday (largest in five years), and will hit the Earth in about five hours from now. Northern and Southern lights (Aurora) expected to be spectacular, and communications and military satellites are being turned to face away from the arriving particles. Get those cameras ready, could be some pretty skies tonight! | ||

Solar wind speed: 347.7 km/sec density: 20.0 protons/cm3 I've only been watching this data for about a year, but this is the highest density I've seen so far. Almost 2x as high as the last highest I saw (12 protons/cm3). Usually its's around 3 or less. People always seem to be more on edge the higher the proton density and/or higher the solar wind speed. I wondered what the heck was going on last night. I started feeling awful by midnight, could hardly walk on wobbly legs. Dizzy, yucky tummy and ringing ears.
