Thank you, Animalspirits! Now we get to clean up the mess. It's hot work in the 90's. I have to stop often because it makes me dizzy and nauseated.
The cat keeps us company by sitting in the shade. He's good at delegating. LOL

Here in the mid-Atlantic (Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland, etc.) we had a wickedly ferocious and unexpected storm last Friday night, June 29th, that blew down so many trees onto power lines that more than a million homes were without electricity. My house, just outside Baltimore, finally got our electricity back on yesterday, the fifth day into it, but many in the area are still without it. One of the major water filtration plants was without electricity for a while, so a lot of people had no water, and other neighborhoods were told to boil their water, but many of those folks had no way to boil water. It was also very hot, with temperature and heat index often above 100 during all this.
Ice was very scarce -- so many people were trying to buy bags of it to save some of the contents of their fridges and freezers, or at least keep a few things cold in coolers, but stores ran out of it rapidly and no replenishments arrived for several days in some areas. Cleaning out spoiled food from warm fridges and freezers has been a common, unpleasant, disheartening chore, made even worse when our kitchens have been both dark and hot without any lights or fans (or air conditioning!) to work in.
Lines at gas stations in some neighborhoods were long, because other gas stations were without electricity and therefore unable to provide gas, and people were rather freaked and wanted to make sure they could get gas while it was still available, because no one knew how long this all would last. Any many, many traffic lights were out for days. Some probably still are out.
Lots of us were cut off from the world without any phones or internet services. Some cell phone towers were out for a while too.
Huge trees were down all over the place, making many roads impassable for days. Most roads are open again in my area, but many of the downed trees, or parts of them, are still lining the edges of many lawns. Everyone has been quite dazed by it all, and people keep saying, "It looked and felt like a war zone."
And we learned a new word, derecho

Another problem we had during this recent storm system and its aftermath is that many people have given up reliable copper-wire telephone landlines in favor of the electricity-dependent phone systems offered in bundles with cable TV and internet plans. These new phone systems come with battery back-ups that supposedly keep people's phones running for a while during power outages, but these battery back-ups don't work, especially when storms take down the nearby cable lines or even take the cable company's plant offline because they don't have electricity either, as happened during this recent outage! Without working landline phones, there was no way to make emergency calls to 911 or to the electric company's outage reporting system in such a way that would automatically provide the location where the call originated.
Cell phones were required to report outages and other emergencies. That's fine if you have a cell phone, and it's charged, and you know how to specify the location of the outage or emergency -- and that you are physically able to do so (you're not injured, etc.). But even some of the cell towers were also offline for a while so cell calls were not an option either!
Knowing how to describe the location of one's emergency is no small detail. This storm and resulting outages hit around 11 p.m., so it was already dark outside (except for all the astonishing lightening!), so road signs, house numbers, and other location-finding markers were very hard to find by people unfamiliar with their surroundings. And there are also sometimes language challenges in verbally reporting locations of emergencies.
And around here, once people switch their phone systems from old-fashioned, dependable copper wire landlines to the electricity-dependent phone-cable-and-internet bundle "upgrades," it's expensive to switch back. Only Verizon's highest priced package (the one with the most TV channels, etc.) includes the option for having a copper wire phone line.
With more severe storms likely, we'll probably have more power outages, and more people will understand the need for dependable emergency communication options. I wonder whether more people will ask, or demand, a return to affordable, reliable landlines.

Hi Sara, your area was hit really hard. I am surprised others haven't told their stories here. We were hit pretty hard but we are in rural Ohio so the biggest problem was the downed trees. We didn't loose our power but many thousands are still without electricity.
If this doesn't wake people up, nothing will! Most people assume that things will move along smoothly. This is just a taste of how awful things will be if we depend exclusively on our technology.

Told you those tubes the Orcas are maintaining go very far into the upper atmosphere.
They blew two tubes and that is what caused the earthquake/tsunami. They are really angry.
It was a demonstration of what they are able to do and we better heed their warning.

Still no rain here for months, and heavy smoke for weeks and weeks from forest fires. I keep hoping for rain. It stinks, literally, eyes burning, what an awful summer. And I really feel for the dedicated fire fighters and their families...

My florida dogwood is changing colors, producing red berries and flowers at the same time! Never had this happen before. Have read that a fall bloom is the effect of drought conditions in summer and rain in the fall. |

Very warm for the first week of Oct, here. Been busy planting fruit trees. Have 2 cherry and 2 apple trees, plus a flowering plum tree.
Finally getting caught with gate and fence repair, my favorite hobby. |

Already starting to blow here in upstate NY-the storm has not even made landfall. Out looking for batteries-camping gear is cleaned out of all the stores. We were looking for a single burner coleman for soup and coffee. No luck-all gone. my sister is all set with BBQ stuff but she is on the NJ border a couple of hours away.My 87 year old mom insists on weathering the storm in her 150 year old brick house overlooking the Hudson River. My cousin lives across the street-he will keep an eye out-and she is stocked with food, water and chocolate.We just worry about the loss of communication.
Hunkering down-have PB and J-found a loaf of bread, at least. We stocked up on water Friday. |

We are fine here.No flooding or power outages.My family in the Hudson valley did not fare quite so well but are ok.
We found sternly to use instead of a camp stove and rigged up a little stove from it with a rack and some metal cookie cooling racks. Perfect for tea and soup and can warm leftovers too but did not need ut.Will save it for the next storm- probably a blizzard. |

i feel like the sole survivor of an airplane crash...i live in a flood zone so i was expecting my basement to flood out, a long power outage and high wind damage to my house...but NOTHING happened...and for that i am deeply grateful...the neighborhood where i live in Philadelphia experienced nothing like the rest of the East Coast as if we were in a protective bubble...no wind, very little rain...it was absolutely mind boggling...how was it possible???...to escape such devastation???...i was watching all the destruction on TV as if i was living in a foreign country...before the storm made land fall my wife and i said a prayer to the Blessed Mother to protect us, my wife then placed a statue of the Blessed Mother on a window sill facing the direction of the storm ...we have two young grand children living with us and we were frightened for their safety...i was fully expecting a worst case scenario event..when Sandy finally made land fall and passed us...i looked at my wife in SHOCK and AWE...it was over!!!...Sandy for us was nothing more than your typical mild rain storm...even though we were smack dab right in the heart of its path of fury and destruction...it was truly a miracle imho.

We had high winds and rain in central Ohio on Monday night. Tuesday morning, it was like a blizzard driving to work. But it didn't stick because the roads were still warm.
Didn't lose our power and its over with no damage. I can't imagine the devastation so many have to deal with NOW!

I can never understand why local power lines are run overhead in your country, surely its safer to run them underground, but then Glen Campbell would have been minus one hit with his Wichita Lineman. |

I totally agree-my husband and I were discussing this just yesterday. Some of the power lines in our town are underground-aesthetically much more pleasing and alot safer. |

I think the debate has been going on for years with your utility companies, i think the problem is one of short term thinking, as apposed to the long term benefits, there are too many ways to show its not cost effective ,
Your local government should step up to the plate and pass local laws to force your utilities firms to draw up plans to start the change over ,obviously there will be a cost to be met by all, but given many years to undertake the change it would not be prohibitive in my opinion.

Sat.Night storm here in Shasta Co. took out our power for 36 hrs...Gusts of wind over 60 mph sounded like the ocean in the trees..Very heavy rain instead of snow..Pineapple Express is what the news is calling these storms..Very strange. |

We have had incredibly cold weather here, single digit and below for several weeks. AND an inversion, smog keeping the cold air down. Bad air and too cold= misery! Snow several times, with lousy drivers= frustration. Then freezing rain, OMG. Boise drivers tend to flip the wonderful SUV's and trucks, because they think they levitate over icy roads We've lived here over 15 years and this is really getting worse yearly. More cold, more snow, more severe weather...

We had a little weather yesterday. Last week Mole Hollow was blanketed in snow, yesterday 71 degrees, storms, flooding rain, and hoarynados. Today back to 30s for high and chance of snow in a couple days.
That 70s vacation would have been nice if not for the naughties that came with it. The meadow was flooded, Critterbear Creek was a raging torrent out of its banks and we saw a dead deer being washed down stream. Winter is back and I suppose that's a good thing. Meanwhile the Jonquils are up and about to bloom and those flowers bring the promise that Spring is not far behind. February is time to start the seeds indoors and prepare the planting beds.

Loved Prometheus. I think it got a bad rap, but I'm looking forward to the extended version.
We've had a number of instance this winter where we'll get some pretty wild temperature swings, like around 50 degrees within a 12-14 hour period.
45 F right now, will be -2 F tonight. Strange. |
